Mobile Phones
This graph shows the functions that mobile users
value the most. (2005)
Another effect on Personal and Social life comes from mobile phones. we are now able to call and text anyone on the go. Mobile phones let us call and text people, access the internet, play games, take pictures and many new smart phones come with other handy new applications which are revolutionizing our lives. Mobile phones are the biggest means of communication throughout the world with an astonishing 4.6 billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide as of 2009. I bet it is hard for you to think of many people you know that do not own a mobile phone with many children and over 60’s now buying mobile phones. Mobiles are one of the easiest and most effective ways to communicate with billions of people everyday using their mobile to call and text people around the world.
SMS (Short Message Service ) is the way of sending text messages to landlines and mobile phones. SMS is the most widely used data application across the worlds with roughly 75% of all mobile users using this service. SMS allows you to communicate with other people without talking and instead by typing messages and sending them using your mobile phone. This message can then be sent to who you like and the receiver can read the message eon their mobile phone. If SMS is sent to a landline most phones are now also able to read the message out for you (even if it may be in a strange computerized voice). SMS has also been adapted to create another type of message service, MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service). As the name suggests this service allows you not only to send text but to send all types of multimedia including photos, videos and sound clips. This is a really handy feature and lets you communicate even better with your friends and family.

Mobile phones now have so many different features. Most phones come with games which means you never get bored and with android phones and Iphones you are also  able to download many different games. Nearly all mobile phones now have a camera which means you can take pictures or video wherever you are without the use of an actual camera. Internet on mobile has to be one of the biggest and best features, we are now able to watch TV programs and videos, connect to social networking websites and visit any website you wish. Obviously this can be seen as a problem as children are able to access any website they want. Many mobile providers now though give you a Parental Security option which blocks any websites that the phone deems as inappropriate for under 18s. Features such as calenders and notes allows you to be organised. And things such as Alarms, stopwatches, calculators etc makes everything easier. Phones also contain GPS this can help us with our personal lives helping us find our way and making sure that we dont get lost. Because of this feature many people are now being more adventurous with where they visit. This though could be a bit misleading as sometimes your GPS may go down may not be able to find out your location or your phone may run out off battery and this could definitely lead to some problems. There are so many features now on phones which are able to help us in our day to day lives.

To find out more about the use of mobile phones i quickly interviewed one of my friends.

So how often do you use your mobile phone
Oh constantly I'm always on it whether thats to go on Facebook, texts my friends or anything I'm always using it.

What feature of your phone do you use the most?
I guess it has to be my texts, i am always texting someone or other.

How many texts do you use a month?
Oh loads it has to be between 1000 and 2000 month

What other services do you use a lot of?
Well i guess I'm always using the internet as well to talk to people and to download apps of the app store.

Why do you think people teenagers especially use their phone so much?
I personally think its for communication every likes to communicate with their friends and with a mobile phone its so simple. With most phones having access to the internet too now  its just so efficient, you can do almost anything on your phone.

Final question do you think you could ever live without your phone?
NO WAY! I use my phone all the time there is no way i could ever live without it

Computers and Laptops

In the mid 20th century the computer was invented. They were the size of a big room when they were first created but now we have changed that to a size of A4 paper. When they were first created PCs costed an absolute fortune and only the wealthiest people were able to afford them. They were big and bulky and did not contain many features. As time progressed computers have become more personal more applications have been added to computers and with creation of the internet computers became even more popular. People like Bill Gates have earned there billions creating programs for Computers.  The Computer computer industry is massive and now with Laptops they are even more successful.  PCs have become portable, laptops enable us to do all the things we would do on a regular computer but with a laptop this means you can do this on the go. Laptops are small which makes transportation easy and with netbooks this is even easier as they they are even smaller. This is why many business men and women are now using laptops as it allows them to do work on the go and you are not refined to one particular place. Not long ago barely anyone had use of a computer but now nearlly everyone has at least one computer or laptop in there house. There are computers available in schools,  libraries and lots of other places.
The Graph above shows the internet use amongst
children and young adults in the US in 2001.
Computers and Laptops come with a whole array of programs and features. Many now contain webcams which allows you to take pictures and if used with programs such as windows live messenger we are able to talk to people all over the world. laptops and computers are contain built in games which can always keep you entertained, with other handy features including calculators, notepads and sticky notes. Thirty years ago you could go through your life without the use of ICT but now ICT is such a huge part of society the generation is becoming dependent on it and without it can not do all their day to day things. Many people now have also become Computer addicts which is obviously not a good thing as it can lead to servers sleep deprivation and mental disorders. Many online games that are on the internet are especially good at this and people can devote their lives to these games, This can lead to many people also becoming antisocial.

The picture above shows ICT from apple and the change in products from 1984- 2006
The effect of ICT on society has been huge mostly it has allowed us to communicate better with people we want and made our daily lives much easier. We now have better personal and social lives due to the creation of laptops, computer and phones. And with the use of internet, mobiles and MP3 people never have a dull moment as there is always something you can do. People may now be becoming too dependent on ICT as it has become such a huge part of society but overall i feel it has made our personal and social life much better

Friday Gmail continued research

Google Buzz

Like Hotmail G-mail has many useful features. Gmail contains lots of storage space with around 7500 MB of storage and counting. Gmail is fast to create and easy to use. Gmail also contains the service google buzz where you can see posts from your friends you follow and so can keep in touch with your friends. This service though contains location devices which establishes exactly where you are this can be seen as a bad aspect because anyone could see where you are. You are able to use GMail in most mobiles that have an Internet service and if you have an android phone the people you add to your contacts are automatically added to your Gmail contacts making it even easier to communicate with other people. Also like Hotmail you are able to change the themes and colours of your profile making it more personal to you. A very handy feature in G-mail is the chat which is shown in your profile just on the toolbar which means you don't even have to avert away from the page, everything is all in one place making it easier for you. You can also add reminders and task to your account reminding you of things you have to do.  All the essential features are included in Gmail including attachments and different folders to organise your work. Gmail contains one of the best spam defence systems which will protect you from all the many viruses and stop spam mail arriving to your inbox.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Email
Email is easy and simple to use. Most accounts are quick and simple to create and managing your email does not take much effort. You are able to send emails to anywhere in the world with a click of a button and is much cheaper than other ways of communication. As long as you have a good connection to the Internet email will be sent to the recipient quickly, much quicker than sending a letter in the post. Also because you are not sending letters we are not wasting paper making email environmentally friendly. The way email servers are created make it easy to organise your email and manage it making sure there is no hassle for you. All of the large Email providers are very secure and update there systems all the time constantly making your email experience better. The way you can change the colours themes etc makes it more personal to you.

Email-

Email (Electronic Mail) is a program that lets you send mail via the Internet.  Wikipedia defines email as "Electronic mail, commonly called email or e-mail, is a method of exchanging digital messages across the Internet or other computer networks."
One email provider I'm researching is Hotmail. Hotmail is a service provided by Microsoft Windows that allows you to read and send emails. Hotmail is a simple program to understand it is easy to sign up to and does not take very long. Once you are signed in you are open to a whole world of email. The messages you are sent are automatically sent to your inbox. Hotmail contains many different folders that lets you organise all your emails, you are also able to create your own personal folders. Like Google Mail Hotmail provides a service where you can flag specific messages that you want to read later this is then automatically sent to the flagged folder. Hotmail also has a new program that "gives you a virtual broom to sweep unwanted email out of your inbox." Hotmail allows you to send up to 10GB in attachments (Photos, videos etc) and lets you see updates and get contents from websites such as YouTube without leaving your inbox. Hotmail is also available on your phone which means you can access your emails and contacts from wherever you are. Hotmail also has a new feature which lets you view, edit and share Microsoft Office files using Hotmail. You can also connect to facebook and myspace keeping you connected with your friends and family. Also by adding birthdays to your contacts you can see when people you know birthdays are coming up. Hotmail also lets you sign in to Windows Live Messenger letting you communicate with everyone. All the features in Hotmail make your email organised and make everything easier for you.
Hotmail Flagged Folder Helps You Organise
And Find The Emails You Want

Hotmail Provides A Calender Where
You Can Organise all Your Events

Gmail Priority Inbox

The other email server i will be researching is Gmail. "Gmail is a free, advertising-supported webmail, POP3, and IMAP service provided by Google. In the United Kingdom and Germany, it is officially called Google Mail"....... Gmail Priority Inbox is a very useful feature that is new to Gmail. Priority Inbox finds the important messages and sorts the emails out for you. Making it simpler and easier to use in everyday life. The important messages are found and then brought to the top of your inbox. Another handy feature Gmail has is the star feature, if you wish to see messages after you've read them you can mark it with a star which puts messages into a special folder. This makes it easier to find the information and messages that you need. Gmail also has a feature that when it has learnt your reading patterns of email (which emails you prioritise) it can filter through your messages to automatically put a star on it when it arrives in your inbox. You are also able to manually say if the messages are more or less important so that Gmail can change the priorities. This feature improves over time as it learns how you use your emails and which emails you read first. By having this feature it makes using your email much more enjoyable as you do not have to keep scrolling down to find the messages you actually want to read. The information you want will be delivered to you faster and the unimportant messages will be sent to the bottom of your messages. This filtering is not available in many of the top email providers e.g hotmail. Gmail also has one of the top spam filters which leads to much less junk mail and viruses again making your email experience more enjoyable.

Twitter Research

Twitter is a social networking site that focuses on just text based comments. The messages aka Tweets are allowed to be up to 140 characters which many people may find is too few.
Your profile where you can see
all the recent tweets.
Twitter allows all of its members to communicate with friends and family. Many celebrities also use twitter and people can use twitter to find out what the celebrities are doing and to find out any news about them.

Unlike blogs you are able to see many different peoples tweets in one place. This is less stressful as it means you do not need to go rummaging through everyones profiles and is much easier to navigate.  In Twitter you are able to send direct messages to other people which you are unable to in most blogs.
Also Twitter includes location technology which means that you can see where other people are, this can be considered good as you can see where your friends are but also other people who you may not want to know where you are will be able to, people may also debate that this can lead to stalkers or burglaries.
Due to celebrity endorsement the amount of twitter users has greatly increased. The number of tweets per day has incresed momentously since last year from 15 million in july last year to nearly 100 million in july 2010.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Twitter
There are many advantages about Twitter. Twitter is a very easy program to use with registration fast and simple. The search engine makes it easy to find the people you are looking for and so can communicate easier. You can personalise your profile just like you can do in blogs so you can make it specifically how you want.
There are disadvantages too. Twitter is a text based site and means you are unable to share photos, videos etc which you can do using a regular blog. Also your tweets are limited to only 140 characters which only allows you to write very little. So this program is definitely not good if you intend to write large amounts. Also like blogs some people may find it effort to update their profile all the time, this may lead to the loss in your followers.

Twitter is quite a controversial topic and often arrises in the media. Especially when important people say disrespectful things in their tweets.

One recent story where twitter got in the news was from Kevin Pietersen when an outburst on his twitter page led to controversy and anger. The link below show the whole story.

Another news story i have found is about the criticism that the west midlands police have endured by creating twitter pages for dogs. Many people have been complaining that the police should be doing something worthwhile instead of 'cringeworthy nonsense' of creating twitter accounts for dogs.
